Locksmith in Brussels: the complete guide to emergencies, prices, your rights and insurance
Short answer: In Brussels, prioritise safety and get a complete written price before work on a slammed door, lost key or break-in. After a burglary, touch nothing until the police arrive. In a rental, the cause determines who pays: upkeep or lost keys generally fall to the tenant, age-related wear to the landlord. Insurance reimbursement depends on your policy. The guides below explain each situation in detail.

Locked out, lost keys, break-in: the first steps
First work out which situation you are in: someone in danger, a forced door, or a simple slammed door. The first move differs, so avoid calling the first number you find online without a written price.
| Situation | First move | Avoid | Read more |
|---|---|---|---|
| Someone in danger behind the door (child, medical) or fire/gas | Call the emergency services immediately, before any locksmith | Wasting time comparing prices | Locksmith page |
| Door slammed, key inside, no sign of forced entry | Look for a spare with a friend, the landlord or the building manager, then re-read the assistance cover in your insurance | Accepting a "from" price with no breakdown | Locked out and home insurance; door opening in Brussels |
| Key lost or stolen, door intact | Have the cylinder replaced if you fear copies are in circulation | Keeping the same cylinder when someone else may have the keys | Changing a lock in a rental |
| Door forced or home entered | Touch nothing and call the police | Tidying or repairing before the police report | Burglary: what to do; locksmith after a break-in |
| Seized lock, key snapped in the cylinder | Do not force it; ask for a written diagnosis | Turning the key with pliers | Locksmith in Brussels |
Five reflexes to keep in mind
- Safety first: if anyone is in danger, the emergency services come before any lock question.
- Touch nothing after a break-in: contact the police before altering the scene and follow their instructions on securing the property. Immediate danger to people takes priority.
- Look for the simple fix: a spare key with a friend, the caretaker, the building manager or the landlord.
- Re-read your policy: some home insurance includes locksmith assistance, some does not; calling first may be a condition.
- Ask for a written, complete price before work starts, then an itemised invoice.
Choose the guide below for your situation: a slammed door, a break-in or a lock in a rental. For a call-out, the Brussels locksmith page presents the emergency service of FUSE SERVICES.
How a locksmith's price is built, and how to spot a scam
The price to ask a locksmith about depends on the job, the time of day, the travel and the hardware. The central advice from FPS Economy is: demand a written, complete price offer before the work. Compare the total for the same work, not just the advertised starting price.
What goes into the price
| Item | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Travel | Whether it is charged separately and how much, before you confirm the appointment |
| Labour | A fixed fee for the job or an hourly rate, and the expected duration |
| Time of day | Whether nights, weekends or public holidays change the price, and by how much, in writing |
| Hardware | Make and security level of the cylinder or lock being fitted |
| Extra work | Per the FPS Economy, get the price in writing before it is carried out |
| VAT and total | A total price including VAT, not a "from" figure |
Warning signs
The FPS Economy gives the example of a locksmith who quotes 100 euros by phone and demands 450 after the job. Its advice, with some common sense added:
- An absurdly low or vague starting price. The FPS Economy warns against ridiculously low prices, often too good to be true.
- The first company that appears in a web search. Prefer a professional you know, or one you can show is really based near you.
- No written offer before the work. Without a written quote you are exposed to sums out of proportion to the job.
- Extra work "discovered" along the way with no written price first: do not let it continue without a figure.
- A vague or missing invoice: ask for a document clearly identifying the business, the work and the amount, and keep it with proof of payment.
If you have already been caught out, the FPS Economy asks you to report the fraud to the Economic Inspectorate through ConsumerConnect. A report does not by itself settle your individual dispute. Our guide to locked-out doors and insurance covers the remedies (insurer, mediation, reporting).
When comparing quotes, describe the same door: merely shut or also locked, key inside or lost, and any signs of forced entry. Ask whether the price covers opening alone or also supplying and fitting a cylinder. If the diagnosis changes on site, ask for the revised work and price before authorising it. A door-opening price is not a complete lock-replacement price.
Tenant or owner: who pays for the lock?
In Brussels the tenant pays for lock maintenance and for replacement after a lost key; the landlord pays for the other necessary repairs, including normal wear. The cause therefore decides who pays, and a lease clause cannot override this split.
According to be.brussels, the tenant carries out minor tenancy repairs and maintenance, except what results from age or force majeure; the landlord does the other repairs needed for normal use, but the tenant remains liable for his own faults. The official list (Brussels Government decree, line "Doors, hinges") is non-exhaustive.
| Situation | In principle paid by | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Key lost: lock or cylinder to replace | Tenant | Replacement after a lost key |
| Greasing and maintaining locks and closing mechanisms | Tenant | Routine upkeep |
| Lock or cylinder worn out by age | Landlord | Wear, unless the tenant is at fault or neglected upkeep |
| Door forced by a third party | Landlord if the tenant is not at fault | Keep the police report and photos |
| Cylinder changed as a precaution | To be agreed before ordering | Do not count on an automatic refund |
The detail, the borderline cases (broken key, stolen keys, slammed door) and how to approach the landlord are in our article changing a lock in a rental: who pays?. If your home is in Flanders or Wallonia, do not simply carry this split over: check your Region's rules and the date of the lease.
Co-ownership: if the building's entrance door or a shared lock is involved, contact the building manager before any work.
Insurance: what is covered and what is not always
Home insurance (also called fire insurance in Belgium) can step in, but nothing is automatic: it all depends on the cover you took. According to Assuralia it covers, among other things, damage to the building caused by theft, attempted theft or vandalism, while cover for the contents against theft is an optional extra.
| Situation | Cover to check | Where to read more |
|---|---|---|
| Locked out, key inside | Home assistance: a clause on forgotten keys or a locksmith, ceiling, excess, prior call | Locked out and home insurance |
| Break-in, attempted theft, vandalism | Damage to the door, frame and lock (building insurance) | Burglary: what to do |
| Stolen belongings | Contents theft cover (optional), ceilings, excess, exclusions | Burglary: what to do |
| Cylinder replaced after stolen keys | Securing and assistance costs: ask the insurer before ordering | Lock in a rental |
| Dispute over the locksmith's price | Legal protection depending on the contract; check separately from emergency locksmith assistance | Locked out and home insurance |
Assuralia points out that each insurer has its own products and that you must read the general and special conditions of your contract. Three practical steps to prepare your claim, without guaranteeing reimbursement:
- Notify the insurer or assistance line before choosing a locksmith whenever possible, and note the name of the person and the file number.
- After a burglary, report the claim quickly, without waiting for the full inventory.
- Keep the itemised invoice, proof of payment and photos of the door before and after.
A landlord's insurance does not automatically cover a tenant's belongings: tenants are well advised to take out their own. What happens when an insurer refuses to pay, and the order of remedies, are explained in the guide locked out and home insurance.

Securing your door afterwards: the upgrades that matter
According to BeSafe, many burglars give up after about 3 minutes if they cannot get in: an exterior door with multi-point locking and a protected cylinder therefore make the difference. Work in order: mechanical first, electronic second.
| Upgrade | Why |
|---|---|
| At least 3-point locking on exterior doors | Locks the door in several places |
| Cylinder protection (security plate or rose) | A cylinder sticking out more than 2 mm is a burglary risk |
| Security cylinder with a security card | Recommended by BeSafe; ask the locksmith which level suits your door |
| Surface-mounted lock if the door has no security lock | Alternative recommended by BeSafe |
| Laminated glass, firmly anchored frames, lockable window handles | Windows and cellar openings are entrances too |
| Alarm only as a complement | It warns and deters but does not delay the burglar |
Also use the burglary-prevention adviser of your municipality or police zone if there is one: a trained police officer or municipal employee who gives tailored, neutral, no-obligation advice. If you rent, talk to the landlord before altering the door (see the article on locks in a rental). After a break-in, the locksmith can check the frame, strike plate and cylinder: see locksmith after a break-in in Brussels.
In Brussels and across Belgium: what changes by Region
For tenancy repairs, the Region in which the home is located matters. This guide applies to a home in the Brussels-Capital Region (Brussels Housing Code, art. 223); for Flanders and Wallonia, check your Region's rules before carrying anything over.
- Lease: the Brussels repair list binds Brussels leases. Elsewhere the rules and application dates differ.
- Police: ask your municipality or police zone how to reach a burglary-prevention adviser, as BeSafe recommends.
- Insurance: check the cover in the policy for the home; location alone does not tell you whether a locksmith will be reimbursed.
- Consumer law: the FPS Economy and ConsumerConnect are federal; the advice to get a written price applies everywhere.
FUSE SERVICES offers an emergency locksmith service in Brussels; the Brussels locksmith page presents door opening, cylinder replacement and securing after a break-in, and the locksmith page presents the whole service.
